The Republic of Artsakh, also known as the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, had a unique political system based on democratic principles. Despite the lack of international recognition, it operated as an autonomous state within its borders.

📜 State administration structure

The system of government of the Republic of Artsakh was based on republican democracy. The Constitution adopted in 2017 established the division of powers into three branches: executive, legislative, and judicial.

Executive branch

Executive power belonged to the president, who combined the positions of head of state and government. The president was elected through republican elections.

Legislative branch

The legislative body was the National Assembly, with a unicameral system. The members of the National Assembly were elected by proportional representation for a five-year term.

Judiciary

The judicial system was independent and operated on the basis of the Constitution and laws.

Elections in Artsakh were held in free and fair conditions. The electoral system included presidential and parliamentary elections.
